Memoir vs. Biography vs. Autobiography: What's the Difference?

A memoir is a first-person story about part of a person’s life, usually written by them. An autobiography is a first-person account of their whole life, also written by them. A biography is someone’s life story written by another person. A legacy book is a personal keepsake built with a loved one, in their own voice, to preserve their history for the family. Here’s how to tell them apart and pick the right one.

These words get tangled all the time, and no wonder. They all mean “a book about someone’s life,” and the differences are easy to blur. But they’re not the same, and if you’re thinking about capturing a loved one’s story, knowing which is which helps you ask for the right thing.

Let me lay it out plainly.

Memoir

A memoir focuses on a slice of a life or a single theme, told by the person who lived it. It’s less “I was born, then this, then that,” and more “here’s the part of my life that mattered, and what it meant.”

Memoirs live in feeling and reflection. Think of a book built around someone’s years at war, or raising a child with a disability, or running the family restaurant. It doesn’t try to cover everything. It goes deep on something.

Autobiography

An autobiography is the whole life, in order, written by the person themselves. Childhood forward, the full sweep. It aims to be comprehensive where a memoir aims to be meaningful.

Autobiographies tend to be more formal and complete, and because they cover a lifetime, they’re a bigger undertaking for the person writing them.

Biography

A biography is written by someone other than the subject, in the third person. The author researches the person’s life, often through interviews, records, and other sources, and tells their story from the outside.

This is the form you see for presidents and public figures. It can be written while the person is alive or long after they’re gone.

Where a legacy book fits

Here’s the one families usually actually want, even when they came in asking for a “memoir” or a “biography.”

A legacy book borrows the best of each. Like a biography, it’s usually created with help, a personal historian does the interviewing and writing, so your loved one doesn’t have to sit down and write a book themselves. But like a memoir or autobiography, it keeps their own voice at the center. It reads like them talking, not like an outside author reporting.

It can cover a whole life or just the chapters that matter most, and it’s built to be a keepsake for the family rather than a book for strangers in a store. If your goal is “I want to preserve Mom’s stories in her own words, but Mom is never going to write a book,” a legacy book is the answer. I wrote more about that in what is a legacy book.

So which one does your family need?

Ask two questions. Who’s doing the writing, and who’s it for?

If your loved one is a writer who wants to sit down and tell their whole life themselves, that’s an autobiography. If they want to write deeply about one chapter, a memoir. If you want a professional to research and write it in an outside voice, a biography.

But if you want their stories preserved in their own voice, without asking them to become an author, and made for your family to keep, you want a legacy book. That’s the one I make.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a memoir and an autobiography? Both are first-person and written by the subject, but a memoir focuses on a part or theme of the person’s life and leans into reflection, while an autobiography covers the entire life in order and aims to be comprehensive.

What’s the difference between a biography and an autobiography? An autobiography is written by the person about their own life, in the first person. A biography is written by someone else about that person’s life, in the third person. The key difference is who’s telling the story.

Is a legacy book the same as a memoir? Not quite. A memoir is usually written by the person themselves about part of their life. A legacy book is typically created with a personal historian, keeps the subject’s own voice, can cover the whole life or select chapters, and is made as a keepsake for the family rather than for publication.

Which type of life story book should I choose for a parent or grandparent? If they won’t be writing it themselves but you want their stories in their own voice for the family, choose a legacy book. If they want to write their whole life themselves, that’s an autobiography; a single meaningful chapter, a memoir; and a professionally researched, outside-voice account, a biography.

I’m Claire, a writer and personal historian on Florida’s Space Coast. Most families who reach me want a legacy book even if they didn’t know the term, their loved one’s real voice, preserved for the people who love them, without anyone having to write it themselves.
