The lives behind the place

Space Coast and Florida Local History

Stories from Brevard County and Florida that show how national history begins in ordinary hometown moments.

Florida’s Space Coast changed faster than most American communities. Citrus groves, fishing towns, military families, beach neighborhoods, and small local schools became part of the story of the space program, modern surfing, music, sports, and popular culture.

This collection looks at the region before and during the rocket era, along with the local beginnings of people whose names later became famous. It also asks the questions that matter for family history: What did daily life feel like? Why did people come here? What did they leave behind? How did a place shape the person they became?

Official archives preserve launches, dates, and public achievements. Family stories preserve the heat, the work shifts, the rented houses, the first view of a rocket, and the conversations around the dinner table. Together, those accounts create a fuller history of Brevard County and Florida.
